MN-Sen Race - Ciresi to Drop Out
Mon Mar 10, 2008 at 03:03:04 PM PDT
Looks like "super lawyer" Mike Ciresi got tired of spending his personal fortune, and has decided to drop out of the race. This leaves Al Franken and Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer as the lone DFL (Democratic Farmer Labor) candidates.
From the StarTrib
Attorney Mike Ciresi said this afternoon that he is dropping out of the race for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in Minnesota.
Ciresi, who unsuccessfully ran for Senate in 2000, said in a statement that "continuing the endorsement race would only lead to an unnecessary floor fight. It is time to step aside."
Warning: Cheney will take up arms on election day
Mon Nov 06, 2006 at 08:26:49 AM PDT
Just when you thought it would be safe to walk the neighborhoods for GOTV, it appears that VP Dick Cheney will not let election day totals tip the power in Washington toward Democrats.
Cheney has vowed to protect his power base, and he's chosen South Dakota as a place to make his final stand.

Crist backs out of appearance with Bush
Sun Nov 05, 2006 at 07:52:27 PM PDT
With the FLA Governor race tightening, Charlie Crist suddenly got cold feet the night before premier Bush is scheduled to stump for him in Florida.
According to The New York Times, Crist said that his time would be better spent in other parts of the state.
My LTE on Iraq in Today's StarTrib
Fri Oct 13, 2006 at 07:23:04 AM PDT
My Letter to the editor was published today in the Minneapolis StarTribune (after the jump).
The Johns Hopkins report out this week was a body blow for me - and I've been against this goddamn war since the beginning.
My father was among the first reservists called to active duty in October 2001. He was 52 years old, and had never been on active duty. His unit was sent to a vast stretch of desert in Qatar, with the only notable landmark being the longest runway strip in the Middle East.
When they landed in 110 degree heat, the only building standing was a simple warehouse. Their job? Create a U.S. military base that would serve as cent-comm for a much larger military operation. You might know this place as Al Udeid Air Base.
When my father was able to send me his first e-mail he wrote, "I don't think this is just about Afghanistan anymore. I think we're headed for Iraq."
So you might say that I have some history with this war.
These anti-war kids need our help TODAY
Wed Feb 23, 2005 at 09:13:51 AM PDT
A group of students at a suburban Minnesota high school are asking for help.
These students - strongly against the war in Iraq - asked for and received permission in Dec. to set-up a counter-recruitment table in response to an on-campus military recruitment table being staffed at their school.
On Dec. 8, more than 230 of their Bloomington Kennedy classmates signed the group's petition demanding that military recruiters not be allowed on campus.

We will fight again in Minni
Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 06:14:27 PM PDT
... because we know no other way. We know the truth, we see through the lies and we are determined to make a difference.
But for now, there is pain and darkness. It was especially hard to drive around St. Paul last night and see the thousands of Kerry lawn signs and bumper stickers. But it reminded me that I am among friends.
Latest Minni Poll: K49 B41
Sat Oct 30, 2004 at 07:19:30 PM PDT
OK, I know that the StarTrib Minnesota Poll had the Mondale/Coleman race terribly wrong in 2002. But Consider that the Minnesota Poll had this race a toss up two weeks ago.
So here's a high point:
...the key number in the poll is Bush's 41 percent, because it closely mirrors virtually all of the statewide polls conducted in recent weeks. "All the polls show him having a hard time breaking out of the mid-40s," he said. "And if you're an incumbent you want to be above 50 percent the week before the election."

4 things that keep me up at night
Wed Oct 27, 2004 at 06:25:39 PM PDT
Kerry's been handed an unexpected gift this week.
The headlines out of Iraq could not be more dire.
The Iraqis warn the UN that 380 tons of explosives have disappeared, and Allawi comes out and blames the U.S. for the insurgent attack on 50 newly-trained soldiers. There's also news tonight that 1 in 10 likely voters has already voted. That means more than 10 million people have already voted - an amazing number! And CW says that this should benefit Kerry.
Bush's strong suit suddenly looks like a bluff, and optimism is flowing freely here at dKos.
So why can't I sleep at night?
Do we play "Cheers" to Rove's "Olde Town Tavern"?
Tue Oct 19, 2004 at 02:32:25 PM PDT
Warning: Pop culture analogy ahead
For the last couple weeks I have been wondering if we Kossacks have been playing right into Rove's ever-wicked hands.
Every day I see at least a half dozen threads with titles that begin "Oct. Surprise!" Our Political Bullshit Radars (PBRs) have been rightly set on "extra Sensitive."
Analogy after the break...
Urgent: ABC to run primetime show on Kerry's medals
Sun Oct 10, 2004 at 11:42:36 AM PDT
I saw an ad this morning about an ABC special on "the truth behind John Kerry's military medals." Ted Koppel is hosting, and the show will air in primetime this Tuesday.
Get active: What are you doing to make a difference?
Fri Sep 17, 2004 at 07:24:57 AM PDT
Forget the polls. It's clear that this race is a dead heat. We all know that the only way to make a difference on Nov. 2 is to get involved.
There have been a number of threads that reference unique volunteer opps and individual GOTV efforts. In a show of solidarity, I would like to see a thread of what all Kossacks will do between now and election day to bring home sweet victory for Kerry/Edwards.
We are the grassroots. We are the ones that will make a difference. What do you promise to do so that when your head hits the pillow on Nov. 2 you can feel confident that you did your part to bring about regime change?
Let's hear it! (My effort below)
New Minni Poll: Kerry +9
Wed Sep 15, 2004 at 07:16:45 AM PDT
A new Minnesota Poll has Kerry leading Bush 50-41 among LVs. This is higher than most recent polls in Minnesota, and is welcome news here in Wellstone Country.
"This suggests that Kerry has gotten his feet back under him," said Larry Jacobs, who directs the 2004 Elections Project at the University of Minnesota's Center for the Study of Politics.
"It's a little higher than I've seen in some other polls, but it doesn't strike me as outrageous," Jacobs said.

Kerry goes hard at Bush War II
Wed Sep 08, 2004 at 11:43:14 AM PDT
Kerry is using some of his strongest language yet to call attention to the human and financial costs of Bush's war in Iraq.
In his most direct attack to-date, today Kerry effectively ties the financial cost of war to Bush's neglect of domestic issues. This is a brilliant strategy. Not only does it make clear that BC04 has made substantial errors judgment before and during the Iraq occupation, but it also makes clear that in an attempt to "take on terror," BC04 has forgotten about the very people they were supposedly trying to protect ... Americans. And now 1000 more are dead.
There will be hell to pay when Americans finally wake up and discover that programs they care about - programs that they rely on - are no longer funded because of BC04's miscalculations.
Talking points for pro-life voters?
Mon Sep 06, 2004 at 06:16:57 PM PDT
It's clear that we will need every vote in November. In my goal to speak to each of my family members and friends about the importance of voting for Kerry/Edwards, I've run into the "immovable object."
By parents are single issue, pro-life voters. By all other measures they are progressives. They value education, do almost a disturbing amount of volunteer work in their town, and my dad worked for a union almost his entire life.
Online coverage of unemployment protests
Wed Sep 01, 2004 at 10:02:20 AM PDT
The NYT (and StarTribune in Minni) are giving significant online coverage to the symbolic unemployment line protest in NYC today.
More than 5,000 are participating by forming a single line and holding pink slips of paper that read "The next pink slip might be yours." The line stretches for almost three miles, from Wall Street to the Garden.
I think this is a very effective way to call attention to a critical issue in this campaign. No violence, no cone-throwing, no fires.

Absentee ballots in Minni - What's the GOP up to?
Wed Sep 01, 2004 at 06:46:03 AM PDT
A number of progessive and independent voters in Minnesota have reported that they have received taped phone messages from BC. In the message, they remind voters (twice) to remember to send in their absentee ballot applications ... applications that will be sent to them by BC.
The applications were not requested by the voters.

MN:06 - Wetterling Visibility
Tue Aug 31, 2004 at 09:53:04 AM PDT
Like all good Minnesotan's, I found myself at the State Fair this week. I went to the DFL booth specifically to find out how Patty Wetterling is doing. And more critically, to find out why she has not been more visible during the last month.
The middle-age volunteer at the DFL booth smiled at me knowingly and said, "Well, you know all about the big wedding?" Admittedly, I had no idea what she was talking about. The volunteer went on to say that Patty has been very busy helping plan her daughter's wedding and that she really didn't have time to be out campaigning in August. But now, she will really get out there!
Bush campaign adviser steps down
Thu Aug 19, 2004 at 12:56:33 PM PDT
The New York Times is reporting that Dean Hudson has resigned. Hudson, the publisher of the RC journal Crisis, was brought on to help BC with the Catholic vote.
Seems that Hudson got himself into a little trouble when he was teaching at Fordham (89-95). Apparently, there was a sexual misconduct accusation against him by a female student. He later resigned from Fordham.
The National Catholic Reporter was recently looking into the misconduct, and Hudson decided to bail.
"'At the time, I dealt with this in an upright manner, and the matter was satisfactorily resolved long ago,' he wrote, without specifying the accusations. Mr. Hudson, 54, said he had been happily married to his current wife for 17 years. Called for comment, he declined."
