I just got back from marching and rallying - I know there is already a lot of media coverage with much better pictures than I can take and a front page post about it, but I thought people might be interested in the perspective of someone who was there through the whole thing (mostly)
I mentioned this last week but I wanted to mention it again, with more updated information.
If you are in the area, come to one of our rallies to protect the Supreme Court!
When it comes to something as important as the Supreme Court, a nomination shouldn't be made in a partisan way, but by seeking consensus across partisan lines for judges who care more about how the law affects ordinary Americans than they do about ideology. Come to our rally and let our senators, our president, and the media know that we want Supreme Court Justices who are fair, independent and committed to protecting our individual rights and freedoms.
Sandra Day O'Connor is resigning from the supreme court! It is very important that all over the country we let the media and president bush know that we want Bush to pick a justice, not a fight. If you are in the chicago area, please come to one of the rallies we are planning. It is sponsored by a whole group of Illinois progressive groups. If you have ideas for speakers at the rally, let me know in the comments, we are making calls inviting people to speak right now. Rally info is in the extended entry:
I know that many people here are concerned about election reform. Well, The most progressive election reform is going to start in the most progressive states and counties. While we tend not to worry about Illinois, since it is a solid blue state, I think that it is important to realize that this solid blue state is working on some very important election reform laws that could end up being a blueprint to other states. (more in extended)
This morning, I read an email from National Jewish Democratic Council and found myself so frustrated I had to write a response. The email mentioned a speech Senator Byrd made maybe a month ago, where he compared the "nuclear option" to Hitler's use of the "enabling clause" to legally come to power in Germany. The article was actually about how Santorum criticized Byrd for the comparison but never criticizes members of his own party for their comparisons to Hitler, the Nazis or the Holocaust. As an aside, they mentioned that they didn't approve of the comparison either. What I am wondering is, what is wrong with that comparison?
