AL-SEN: Jeff Sessions after Katrina

Wed Aug 29, 2007 at 12:39:06 PM PDT

Political Wire points out:

In Alabama’s 2008 Senate race, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) is in a strong position for reelection, according to a new SurveyUSA poll. He is leading state Sen. Vivian Figures (D) by 22 points, 59% to 37%.

Therefore, we must assume that Alabamians have forgotten about this (below the fold):

HELP!! re. Existential Crisis

Tue Jul 17, 2007 at 03:44:22 PM PDT

I'm in a bit of a quandary. You see, like many people here, I have a burning need to get out there and fix the country as much as I can, make it a better place and save the world.

I also have a full time job where I spend ten and a half hours each weekday making money but doing nothing to help save the world.

To try and combat this ten hours of daily inaction, I created a podcast and blog, and after six months of regular updates, I realized that if I were doing that ten hours a day, I would be far happier.

Which gets us to the quandary...

Fred Phelps and Evil; a podcast

Tue Apr 17, 2007 at 04:39:41 PM PDT

This is the script from my podcast from tonight at the Carter Gilson Report.

I'll probably regret this in the morning.  I try not to give the proudly evil the satisfaction of entering my brainspace for any length of time, preferring to fight the more banal evils of the world.  But some things cannot stand unnoted.

On Monday, in Blacksburg, VA, a gunman went on a rampage through the campus of Virginia Tech, killing 32 and wounding more than 50 before taking his own life.  Who he was we now know, though what triggered this, we may never fully know.

But what we do know is that this tragedy, this senseless act of destruction, will be followed, as an earthquake, by aftershocks of evil, from the Virginia pro-gun group that claimed that students should be allowed to carry concealed weapons, to virulently anti-good persecution-complex drama-queen Fred Phelps.

The Iraq War Begins, four years later.

Mon Mar 19, 2007 at 12:59:24 PM PDT

crossposted from The Carter Gilson Report. This is the script of my podcast for today.

It was four years ago today that the war in Iraq began. It’s amazing how anniversaries like this can creep up on you.

I had planned to do a run-down of the current Bush Administration scandals today, but I had forgotten that today is a special day. One of those days that really do stick out.

I’d forgotten, by and large because I didn’t want to remember. It’s just as easy to remember December 9th, 2000, the day that the Supreme Court handed the Presidency to the loser before all the votes were counted as the day that the American Democracy died and the Constitution was rendered irrelevant.

Channel 5 (Boston) Responds

Thu Sep 07, 2006 at 04:07:45 PM PDT

I wrote to my local ABC affiliate, Channel 5 (WCVB), yesterday to find out if they were planning to air "The Path to 9-11".  This is what I wrote:
I am disappointed that ABC has produced the distortion-laced "Path to 9-11" miniseries, and also disappointed in Channel 5 for planning to air it.  As have been documented online and by those such as ABC's own Richard Clarke, many of the scenes depicted never happened, and the implication of the miniseries, that Osama bin Ladin's rise was due to President Clinton's inaction, is not supported by the 9-11 Commission report, upon which it is purportedly based.  I turn to Channel 5 for news every night, but if this miniseries airs without these inaccuracies being fixed, I will have to turn elsewhere.  I would hope that the news department would be able to pressure the programming department to drop the program, or at least to highlight the inaccuracies of the program.

Alas it was in their webform, so I wasn't able to say as much as I wanted to.  At any rate, their response, and my counterresponse, on the flip.

CT-Sen: HRC Defends Endorsement (poorly)

Fri Jun 16, 2006 at 08:04:19 AM PDT

Today, the Human Rights Campaign finally (two weeks later) responded to my email to them over their wrongheaded endorsement of Joe Lieberman.  This is their reply:

MA-Marriage: Convention moved to July 12

Wed May 10, 2006 at 10:47:07 AM PDT

The Constitutional Convention met today and immediately postponed debate until July 12, another Wednesday (what is it with Wednesday?).  This gives both sides another two months to muster support.  It should hopefully also allow the SJC to look into whether the initiative follows established constitutional rules before the debate starts, though there is no guarantee on that.

At any rate, nine weeks from today the issue is taken up again.  For more information, turn to MassEquality, a group with whom I have no affiliation other than being on their mailing list.

MassEquality $50,000 match challenge

Thu May 04, 2006 at 08:34:21 AM PDT

MassEquality, one of the front-line groups campaigning for marriage equality and gay rights in Massachusetts, is raising money for the next round of Constitutional amendmentitis, happening this coming week.  And today, they sent out this email:

ACTION: Write Your Safe Congress-Critter

Wed Oct 05, 2005 at 06:59:33 AM PDT

If, like me, you happen to live in a virtually non-contested Democratic congressional district, now is the time to act.

As Kos points out on the main page, Rep. Emmanuel's ennumeration of the issues Democrats are fighting for completely ignores the number 1 issue concerning Americans.  While I can almost understand the desire to play it safe in tough contests, there are many CDs in this country that are safely Democratic.  Many of them are represented by Congress-Critters who are nearly complete unknowns.

We need to write them, now, and tell them to make Iraq an issue.  We need to make them see that Rep. Emmanuel is missing the boat, and get them in front of the cameras.  The more Democrats in Congress who are speaking out, the more comfortable those in less safe districts will be in speaking out against the war.

Below, find the letter I sent Rep. John Tierney, MA-6, earlier today.

Romney: The Red Speck

Thu Sep 15, 2005 at 06:43:07 AM PDT

Crossposted from Defeat Romney

Like blood on a tablecloth, Gov. Mitt Romney has likened himself to "a red speck in a blue state".

As usual, Romney made this statement outside of his home state.  It's not unusual for a Governor to head out of state from time to time, but Romney has made a habit of this.  It's led many people in his own party to wonder if he has any plan to run for reelection, since he has no apparent interest in his current job.

[UPDATED] Mass and Marriage Equality: Constitutional Convention Today

Wed Sep 14, 2005 at 12:01:54 PM PDT

Update [2005-9-14 15:44:24 by obJeff]::We won! Local politics is strange. In The Globe:

"Gay marriage has begun, and life has not changed for the citizens of the commonwealth, with the exception of those who can now marry," said state Sen. Brian Lees, an East Longmeadow Republican who had been a co-sponsor of the amendment. "This amendment which was an appropriate measure or compromise a year ago, is no longer, I feel, a compromise today."
...
"The union of two women and two men can never consummate a marriage. It's physically impossible. We can't get around that. You can be a family, absolutely. You can be loving, and I respect that absolutely. But you're not married," said Rep. Phil Travis, D-Rehoboth. "The other 49 states are right and we are wrong."

MA-Marriage Rights date set

Thu Aug 25, 2005 at 06:47:28 AM PDT

The next installment of the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention is set to begin September 14.  Beyond showing up to demonstrate, if you live in Massachusetts the greatest thing you can do to support marriage equality is to urge your State Senators and Representatives to vote agaist and actively oppose the stated amendment.

A group called MassEquality has a great tool on their website that will automatically send email to you Senator and Representative, as well as the Senate President and Speaker of the House.

House Focus, Week 0

Wed Jun 15, 2005 at 06:48:45 AM PDT

Updated: Fixed the number of Reps, which my sleep-deprived brain screwed up.

There are 435 seats in the House of Representatives.  They will all come up for re-election in 2006.  Reclaiming the Senate would be great, but even if we get six of the nine questionable Republican seats there, we'd just be in the same stagnant period we had after the 2000 election without the House to back us up.

The front page looks at occasional House races, but there isn't a concerted effort, from what I've seen, to look at all 435 races.

So, that's what I'm going to do.

RSS and the Right

Mon Jun 13, 2005 at 11:18:02 AM PDT

I've been using GMail for several months now, and one of the feature's they've been slowly rolling out to members is "Web Clips".  This is a spot at the top of the page where a current (or somewhat current) item from the RSS or Atom distribution feed can be displayed.  You can pick from their already set-up ones (WaPo, NYTimes, Reuters, Yahoo), or set up your own from RSS feeds you know and love.

I set mine up with Kos, MyDD, Think Progress, and Kicking Ass.  I'm sure more will add, but I think that covers a good part of the liberal blogosphere and more than enough for me over my morning coffee and email.

As an exercise in testing my stomach, I decided to find RSS feeds from the other side as balance.

War is a Threat to Marriage

Wed Jun 08, 2005 at 06:35:50 AM PDT

According to USA Today:

The trend is severest among officers. Last year, 3,325 Army officers' marriages ended in divorce -- up 78% from 2003, the year of the Iraq invasion, and more than 31/2 times the number in 2000, before the Afghan operation, Army figures show. For enlisted personnel, the 7,152 divorces last year were 28% more than in 2003 and up 53% from 2000. During that time, the number of soldiers has changed little.

Compare that to divorce rates in Massachusetts, where there are only 24 divorces for every 10,000 persons, and I think the implication is clear.

Support Gay Marriage, oppose War, and stand up for the American Family!
