ACTION ALERT: Demand an Investigation of Bill Frist
Wed Oct 19, 2005 at 11:20:00 AM PDT
Hey guys. While all of you are waiting/refreshing your page every 15 seconds waiting for certain news, here is another
easy activism you can take part in to
restore honor and dignity in Washington. Ask for an investigation of Senator Bill Frist. Yes, so far we have
written two letters to the Senate Ethics Committee requesting an investigation of Senator Bill Frist's sale of HCA, Inc. stock from his so-called "blind" trust. We haven't gotten any response from them yet. The
Securities and Exchange Commission is already investigating whether Frist is guilty of insider trading because his family started HCA and his brother sits on the board of directors. So we need your help in convincing the leaders Senate Ethics Committee to investigate the sale of Senator Bill Frist's stock in his family's company.
Call their offices and demand that the Ethics Committee investigate Senator Frist's stock sales:
- Senator George Voinovich (R-OH)
Chairman, Senate Ethics Committee
202-224-3353
- Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD)
Ranking Member, Senate Ethics Committee
202-224-5842

Katrina Activism:Stand up for our Police, Firefighters, our First Responders
Mon Oct 17, 2005 at 08:43:44 AM PDT
Today
here at Common Cause we have released
our latest report in a series of them on
government failures surrounding Hurricane Katrina - this time looking at how a
decade of failed telecommunications policy has left our police and first responders without adequate communications tools when crises hit.
Based on this information we are asking for our activists from all over the country to take immediate action and put pressure on the Congress to make sure that our publicly owned airwaves are used for public safety and the public good. Congress is expected to take up legislation this week that would set a hard deadline for the broadcast industry to turn over a portion of our airwaves. Please join us in
calling our Senators today to make sure that our publicly owned airwaves are used for public safety and the public good. More details after the jump. Thank you so much again for making us feel welcome at this wonderful community.
Common Cause calls for Ethics Investigation of Senator Frist
Tue Sep 27, 2005 at 12:34:55 PM PDT
Crossposted on
CommonblogCommon Cause today
called on the Senate Ethics Committee to initiate an investigation to determine whether Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) violated Senate ethics rules by directing trustees to sell his HCA Inc. stock held in a blind trust.
The model blind trust agreement available on the Ethics Committee's website states that there shall be no "direct or indirect communication" between senators and trustees unless the senator is directing the trustee "to sell all of an asset . . . [which] creates a conflict of interest or the appearance thereof due to the subsequent assumption of duties" by the senator.

ACTION ALERT: Baghdad Votes, DC Doesn't ...
Tue Aug 02, 2005 at 08:01:04 AM PDT
Everyone here is rooting for the Iraq war hero/combat veteran Paul Hackett in Cincy today, who is gunning for a seat in the United States Congress. But I wanted to come here today and ask you guys to join another campaign - which is to fight for voting rights for the residents of Washington D.C. Citizens of OH-02 are voting for a congressional representative, who will actually have a vote. Earlier this Jan. we saw the citizens of Baghdad braving deadly violence to vote and giving us those unforgettable images of their raised purple-inked fingers. But as heroes like Major Hackett gave it all their all so that citizens of Baghdad could vote, here in D.C. folks watched those images of puple inked fingers knowing they are still without any representation in Congress. In fact, expatriate Iraqi citizens living in DC voted in the Iraqi election, while their neighbors have gone more than 200 years without representation in Congress.

Coin-Gate ACTION ALERT: 3 Reforms to Clean Up Ohio
Thu Jul 14, 2005 at 07:19:01 AM PDT
We know ROVE IS THE TOPIC of the week, however thought we let you know about some important reforms taking on the WHOLE CULTURE OF CORRUPTION, starting in Ohio. Little more than two weeks ago we (
Common Cause) sent out an
email to our supporters about the "Coingate" political scandal, which has exposed how the GOP in OH have been exchanging political favors for campaign contributions. But the scandal goes much deeper, threatening democracy in Ohio in a culture of systematic political corruption. These threats include:

- The Ohio General Assembly voting to increase the amount wealthy donors can give to their campaigns by 400percent, allowing candidates to accept contributions of $10,000,
- Partisan gerrymandering of legislative and Congressional districts allowing self-interested politicians to chose their voters, while tens of thousands of voters are left disenfranchised,
- Partisans administering elections in which they have a direct interest, while voters are left withour sufficient access to the polls casting doubts on election results.
We need to end this culture of political corruption today. More after the jump ...
DeLay Action Alert: CALL Hastert & Radio Ads. in his Districts
Tue Jun 28, 2005 at 07:23:39 AM PDT
Hi folks. First and foremost ... let's get the
action item out of the way.
Call Hastert's offices today and ask the Speaker to intervene to jump start the stalled ethics process in the House, and help bring in an outside counsel to investigate Tom DeLay.
Thanks to all of you our
radio ads (Real Audio file)campaign officially got underway yesterday in Speaker Hastert's district. We are
running ads (placed in traffic and weather reports) that are urging Hastert's constituents to drive home the message that he needs to demonstrate leadership by bringing in an outside counsel to investigate ethics allegations against Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) and restart the stalled ethics process in the (GOP dominated) House of Reps. We are also sending him a letter today along with
Public Campaign,
Public Citizen, and
U.S. Public Interest Research Group urging him to step in, getting the dysfunctional Ethics Committee back on track, and encourage the appointment of an outside counsel to investigate DeLay.
More after the jump, including a front page article in the Roll Call today.
URGENT PBS ACTION ALERT!: Let's Keep the Big Bird Flying (Updated)
Wed Jun 22, 2005 at 12:56:57 PM PDT
UPDATE (4:55 pm EST): Thanks for the quick recommend guys. We need to keep up these calls all through the day tomorrow. If you want to pass this on to your friends and family, simply use this action page:
http://www.commoncause.org/KeepBigBirdFlyingJust posted this on
CommonbLog. Last week, House appropriators cut $100 million from next year's budget for public broadcasting. House members also voted to cut all federal funds to public broadcasting by 2008. As the Washington Post noted, the cuts were a "malicious wounding, if not outright attempted murder, of public broadcasting in America."
We asked you to oppose these drastic cuts, and
your calls and emails made a difference. The House Appropriations Committee decided not to cut off all funds by 2008, but the Committee did not rescind its $100 million cut for 2006.
But time is running out and tomorrow, the House will vote on its final budget proposal for public broadcasting.
That's why we need your help again, as we need to flood the Congress with phone calls and emails. More after the jump.

Tue Jun 21, 2005 at 12:19:24 PM PDT
Hi folks,
We just sent out an email alert asking our members and supporters to help us raise $10,500 online so that we can purchase drive-time radio ads in House Speaker Dennis Hastert's (R-IL) district. We need to raise $10,500 by the end of the week to buy these ads, which will urge constituents from the Speaker's district to contact him and ask him to appoint an indepdent, outside counsel to investigate the mounting allegations of ethics abuses against House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX). The ads will urge Hastert's constituents to drive home the message that he needs to demonstrate leadership by bringing in an outside counsel to investigate ethics allegations against DeLay and restart the stalled ethics process in the GOP controlled House.
You can view the text of email from Chellie Pingree, Common Cause President, right after the jump.
Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks again guys. -Murshed

Jeb Bush is Raising Money for "Election Reform"
Tue May 31, 2005 at 01:20:23 PM PDT
You can't make this up. Jeb Bush is helping Arnold Schwarznegger raising money in Florida for election reform in California. So we (
Common Cause) are inviting him to come out to California and team up with Common Cause to raise resources so that we can push for redistricting reform in Florida. Here is the post I just put up on
CommonBlog:
No really ... I am not making this up. Governor Jeb Bush (R-FL) is out doing fundraising for election reform. Governor Bush was helping out California Governor Arnold Shwarzenegger
promoting election reform in California:
It's a funny old world when Floridians are out raising money to help other states reform their elections.

UPDATE II: Is Tom DeLay the RUN AWAY BRIDE?
Fri May 27, 2005 at 08:11:43 AM PDT
UPDATE II 1:13 pmIf people are interested in emailing Keith Olberman, here are the addresses:countdown@msnbc.com or Olbermann@msnbc.com
UPDATE 12:06 pm EST: Thanks again for recommending this diary guys. Minutes ago we sent a letter out to the Ethics Committee DEMANDING an OUTSIDE COUNSEL to investigate Tom DeLay. David from
DailyDeLay (who are doing a great job), just made
this post.
Just posted this on the
CommonBlog. We are going to see a lot of spin in the media next few days about how Tom DeLay really had nothing to do with with Texas based political action committe (TRMPAC), which he created and fundraised for, and lead, after the clear cut decision which came out yesterday. We can't let this happen. We can't let DeLay turn himself into a run away bride distancing himself from TRMPAC. We need to make sure to get our message out on the media about how DeLay's fingerprints all over TRMPAC. Help us get the word out guys. Thanks again.
My entire post from the
CommonBlog with links to copies of TRMPAC documents showing connections between DeLay and TRMPAC after the jump.
